The Dynamic Window System

[Pillar] [Pillar]

In a dynamic building system we could see a window as a complete, pre made element. It then would be an item which can not be changed, other than by remanufacturing in the factory.

This section investigates the idea that a window could be made, build up of standardized components, so it would be changeable.

The step we take is that the structural part (the part that takes the loads) is no longer the window frame, but the glass itself. Two sheets of hardened glass fixed together to form an insulating glass panel have a considerable strength. This more or less eliminates the need for a window frame in the normal sense.

This window (which was not designed to connect to the panel system) is made of profiles and hard glass sections. The corner blocks connect the profiles. The glass is fixed to the (flexible) profiles. The profiles connect to the walls.

This picture shows the elements you would buy at the hardware store to make a small window. All profiles would have standardized dimensions, you would not have to cut them.

You start by plugging in the connectors in the profiles.

The frame is ready.

The opening window pane needs no frame. It is made of double hardened glazing. The hinge is a plastic strip in stead of normal steel hinges.

This system is not perfect. Inventors or producers are invited to develop a window system which is more plug and play.
