The idea of the plug and play home

[Pillar] ___Why are houses so static?___ [Pillar]

Did you ever wonder why it is so immensely cumbersome and costly to build, let alone change a house? The answer is that houses are not seen as objects which have to change. House building systems are not designed to change. Usually house building systems are not designed at all. The have grown. In the world of house building, no one except the owners likes to think about an easy way to changing the building. The architect likes to see the building as a monument of himself. Change, specially by the owner, would damage the monument. The contractor likes to glue and cement everything together. This means a lot of work in case anybody is so dum to want to change the building. Government likes to regulate and tax change heavily.

These pages are about a home building concept which is entirely focused on change. It starts with the assumption that peoples needs are constantly changing and that the house should accommodate to the needs of the people in stead of the other way round. The building system must invite to change. If your needs are today different from yesterday, you change the house with minimal effort and minimal cost.

How can we do this? It is possible with a house building system which is based on the plug and play principle:

[Pillar] _______Plug and play_______ [Pillar]

  1. A building system consisting entirely of complete, ready made building elements, available through your local hardware stores and building markets;
  2. Standardized connection technology to connect elements;
  3. A total deskilling of connection technology to enable plug and play connections by layman;
  4. A system of standardized dimensions for elements so you can interchange them.

This results in a building system which could be compared to famous other dynamic building systems like LEGO, Lundia, Fisher Technic en Meccano, but then for building houses.

[Pillar] Building a house would mean this: [Pillar]

  • Make your design, using a catalog of element. If you like, use an architect or adapt a design from a design book;
  • Go to your local building market/hardware store and select the elements you need. Have them delivered to your building site.
  • Click them together. There are no connections which need skill. They are all of the kind of "plugging in things" or "clicking them together". There is absolutely no need for a contractor.
  • Live in your home.
  • When your needs change, "unclick" the elements, sell them, buy new, put them in an other place, store them, use them somewhere else.

In these pages I will prove to you that this concept is viable. In fact it has been realized for some infrastructure in your home, like the telephone system.

Read more about the concept en consequences in a paper that I presented at the Euromat 97 conference in April 1997.
