The Dynamic Telephone Infrastructure

The ultimate plug and play telephone system in the home is the wireless telephone system. Of course this exists. But it could be driven a little further. It could be made in a way that you do not need any cable in your home. All telephones, faxes, computer fax, answering machines, would be fitted with a smart card and a little antenna. No telephone wire needed at all.

At this moment the cost for a total wireless telephone system are still higher them for wired telephone. But this may change in the future.

The wired telephone system though is already very much plug and play. It uses a word wide standard for interfacing and even the connector used is pretty much standardized and very easy to use.

The telephone system uses a modular jack which is very easy to connect by laymen.

Just click appliances and cables together. All components are sold pre-made and ready to use in any hardware store.

This little jack is technological marvel. It is very small, it is very easily fitted on a cable using a dedicated tool, it provides a stress relieve for the cable, it is easy to connect and disconnect.

Fixing the jack on a cable with this dedicated tool only requires the skill to pinch the levers of the tool. All "skill" is in the tool and in the jack, no skill required for the user. This is the kind of technology I would like to see for 220V connections too.
