The Dynamic Outer Cladding System

[Pillar] [Pillar]

The outer shell of "raincoat" of the building should have the plug and play feel to it. You should be able to change it at will. When you start with a low budget, you first use inexpensive material like plastic or steel sheet. When you are get more well to do, you install ceramic tile of marble. The next occupant will favor another material, etc.

We think this is possible with a micro-connection material (see also the panel section) In the prototypes we used Dual Lock from 3M. This material contains many little mushroom-shaped extrusions. The mushrooms click together and form a firm connection.

The micro connection interface should of course be a standard. Every type of cladding should end in the same interface. Manufacturers of steel, wood, ceramic, plastic exterior cladding should adopt the same standard interface.

The panel elements could be fitted with patches of micro connection material on the outer side.

Side view.

Interior side of the element.

Exterior side of the panel.

Onto these patches, all kinds of materials could be fitted, for instance tiling.

[Pillar] ____Exterior Tiling____ [Pillar]

The next pictures show a tile 300 x 300 mm which has little feet fitted with 3M's Dual Lock strip.

The small version of this tile is 150 x 150 mm

Tiles are just clicked on the wall. No pointing needed.

They are just as simple removed by pulling them off. The surface area of connection material you apply, determines the force you will need to do this.

Rain water pipes could be integrated in ceramic tile elements.

Special glazed elements around windows and doors could emphasize these openings.
